Boardrider’s continues popularity

Have you heard about the Boardrider’s club? Are you member?

In 1999 P.E. Teacher Mr. Patrick Evans started the Boardriders Anonymous Club.  Since the beginning, Boardrider’s has been a popular club.  This year, weekly meetings have been attended by about 50 students.

Boardriders Anonymous is a club to unite the boardriders, as in skateboarders, and to learn and practice tricks.  Of course, a little bit of fun goes into the club, too.  The club meets every Wednesday at lunch in the Performing Arts Room, P.A.R.

To get in the club, seventh and eighth graders have to name 10 types of boards.  These can include any boards, not just skateboards.  For example, cardboard, chalkboards, surfboards, skateboards, and fish board have all been given as answers!  For sixth graders to join, potential members have to get “adopted” by an eighth grader who is in the club and also name the 10 different boards.

A typical meeting includes lots of people and boards; sometimes there is even music.  Members can be identified on almost any day, through their popular sweatshirts.  Even teachers have been known to sport the apparel in recent years.

Yeneui Sanchez a sixth grader had joined boardriders because her brother was in last year.  Yeneui  hated when her male friends would say girls can not ride, so she joined to prove them wrong.  Yeneui says that the club is very fun and she likes that she could now have time to learn and practice tricks. She likes that she could hang out there with her friends watching the others.  “Do what you want and don’t let anyone keep you from doing it,” said Yenui.

Joseph Leal an eighth grader had joined boardriders last year because his friend made him, and then he started liking it and joined again this year.  Now he comes in every Thursday and practices his tricks and he says now he knows more and gets to go against his friends.his favorite thing about the club is the time he gets to practice tricks and the party they have at the end of the year.  “Ride or die,” said Joseph.

Richard Bunhey has been in boardriders for three years, now serving as vice president of the club.  In sixth grade he says it looked cool and fun so he wanted to try it out.  He joined to learn more tricks and to have fun.  “Boardriders is fun and it’s lit because when you start to ride its easy but when you learn to do tricks it’s better,” said Richard.

Boardriders is one of many clubs at MacArthur for students to join and show their spirit, pride, and achievement.
