Boys basketball wins championship

Going undefeated in four games, the boys basketball team took home the trophy.

On Saturday March 25 the MacArthur Boys Basketball team won their seventh championship at Segerstrom High School. The basketball team went undefeated in four 24 minute games.

In the first game they played against Lathrop 21-17. In the game against Willard they got the final score of 37-9. In the semi final they got a win against Villa 27-26. In the final championship they won first place against Sierra Prep 30-18.

The team played from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Coach Ron Cheser said, “Outstanding. Incredible.” In the semi final game against Villa they were up in the fourth quarter and they came back. In the game with Sierra Prep they lost the first and second quarter but was able to win first place by always coming back.

The basketball team practiced for six weeks for the tournament. Cheser said, “They improved a lot but not as much as I hoped.” He believed eighth-grader Marwan Ahmed would be MVP because he got seven assists and scored 16 points, but it was hard to choose because the entire team played well.

Marwan said, “Basketball is a sport I can play to get away from everything.”

The team captain, eighth-grader Nicholas Padilla, scored 18 points and got 18 steals.  “I felt that my effort was great, but I know I could have done better,”

Coach Jesus Lozano said, “In the beginning I saw a bunch of boys bouncing a ball.  At the tournament, I saw a great group of young boys beginning their growth to gentlemen.” The boys unfortunately lost their streak of five championships last season, but hopefully began their streak again.
