If you were a MacArthur student was was struggling to keep G. P. A. up to the standards set; the homework recovery program sought to assist your efforts. The program happened twice a day, two days a week. The before-school program occurred in room 41, but after school students gathered in the school’s library on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All MacArthur students who were not satisfied with their grades could have benefitted from this program; this homework recovery program is run by the counselors to help improve grades.
Counselor Ms. Ines Coco Amaya helped run the program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Coco Amaya said the program is, “offered 2 times each day, 1 in the morning and 1 after school. It’s voluntary, everyone can come, which is about 25-30 kiddos each day.” The goal of the sessions was to “just give students a quiet place to work; kind of like an end-of-semester push.”
Counselor Dr. David Diaz helps students improve their grades every time at the homework recovery program. Diaz said, “It’s a good sign that it’s not the end of the semester. When it’s the end of the semester it’s too late, but before you could change any grade.” This was why the five Macarthur counselors initiated this program to help students be successful in school.
Eighth-grader Amanda V. attended homework recovery every time it took place. Amanda said, “It helps me because it gives me a safe environment to do my homework.”
This club started by taking a seat in either room 41 or the library. Then one of 5 Macarthur school counselors checked the students in. “To get help just raise your hand or ask if they can help you,” said Amanda.
Students attended the homework recovery program to make their G.P.A. higher; G.P.A. stands for grade point average. G.P. A. is so important for students because “it’s kind of like a direction or guide on how you’re doing, so it’s kind of how you’re doing on average in each class. G.P.A. also lets us know what situation a student is in. It is a very good indicator on how you’re doing in school,” Diaz said.
Avery P., an eighth-grade student, attended the homework recovery program every time it was open. She has good habits, uses her agenda, and checks Aeries daily. Checking Aeries “every day in Tiger Connection helps me remember my missing assignments,” said Avery. With this information homework recovery is there to help Avery complete any missing assignments.
Ultimately, MacArthur Intermediate pushed to help students have the best end-of-semester grades as possible. The homework recovery program was on example of the effort.
