MacArthur gets a new fence after it collapses

Because of the weight of plants and strong wind gusts, the fence on the back field that separates MacAthur from the bike path collapsed.

“The weight of the plant growing on it caused it to fall, and the 50 M.P.H. wind,” said Assistant Principal Mr. Craig Johnson, referring to MacArthur’s fence that parallels Flower Street on the back field.

The fence fell on December 5 when it was really windy, but it was restored within a week.  The fence was replaced by the building services department from the district office.  Workers from the district determined how best to replace the fence to avoid it falling again.  The replacement fence was paid for by the district office.

Immediately on arrival, the fallen fence was cleaned up and the plants and flowers were removed.  There was a temporary fence until a permanent one could be put in.  Only the fallen fence was replaced because all the other fences are fine.  For the permanent replacement, an outside contractor was responsible for the work.

The fences affect MacArthur’s campus because of safety concerns.  The are able to keep the surrounding neighborhoods from the students.  To prevent the fence from falling again is, “To not build the fence so high and have too much plants or flowers on it to bring the fence down,” said Johnson.
