Students take CJSF officer roles

At the end of the 2016 school year, CJSF held an election to determine officers among their returning members

The California Junior Scholarship Federation, also known as CJSF is a club here at MacArthur, advised by math teacher Mrs. Skipper-Spurgeon, for seventh and eighth graders that provide community service and tutoring sessions here on campus. For the 2016-2017 school year, four seventh grade members were nominated the previous year and voted on to lead this year’s CJSF club as eighth grade officers.

The officers are as follows: President Brendan Mai Ha, Vice President Nina Le, Secretary Christie Vu, and Treasurer Teresa Dinh.

Members of CJSF provide community service like campus cleanups after school and beach cleanups at the Newport Aquatic Center. Most of the variety of community service members do is within school.

Along with community service, members of this club either take part in the MacMentor program, which works with ASB, or work with a teacher to tutor students of any grade level.

To be eligible to join this club, students must have A’s in four of their academic classes or one B in one of those classes and pay four dollars for the school year. Members then attend meetings on the second Thursdays of each month in the library held by Skipper and the officers.

The previous officers chose who would be the best two candidates for each position to lead the next year’s CJSF club. During a monthly meeting, all members voted on who they wanted as their leaders.

Secretary Christie Vu said, “When I was announced as CJSF secretary, I was very surprised and honored that I was even nominated. I was very nervous when everyone turned in their votes and when Ms. Skipper declared me as secretary; it was one of the most proudest moments of my life. I am very proud to hold the position of CJSF secretary in the 2016-2017 school year.”

CJSF Treasurer Teresa Dinh says, “When I was announced as treasurer of CJSF, I was overwhelmed and loss for words. I was astonished by the news because I thought that I would not have the position of treasurer. I am filled with gratitude and I hope to make CJSF memorable and exciting for the new members. I will also strive to do my best work as treasurer. Please look forward to the events that will take place in CJSF!”
