The MacArthur Girls Basketball Team’s tournament has been delayed due to the heavy rain and a leak in the roof of Century High School. The girls’ basketball team arrived at the tournament on November 15, expecting to play their first game against the Advanced Learning Academy, ALA, only to find out it had been canceled due to the rain. The tournament has been rescheduled to Saturday, December 13, at 8 AM.
Coach Mr. Charlie Andres believed that if the team played, they would have dominated. Andres said, “It doesn’t bother me too much, but it’s too bad because we were ready to play ALA and win.”
After six weeks of practice, some players who stood out to Andres were eighth grader Camila V., seventh grader Maia M., and sixth grader Bella V. At practice, there were a lot of skill-building drills, three-player scrimmages, and conditioning. Forty-five students tried out, but the coaches cut it down to 15, choosing by basketball abilities.
Sixth grader Dahlia S. said, “I felt really good. It was very nice, and I loved being on the basketball team my first year of middle school.”
Eighth-grader Isabella M. said, “I was really mad and upset that I woke up early for nothing, just to find out the gym roof was leaking, but if we did have the tournament, I was confident that we would win.”
The rainy day schedule affected the girls’ basketball tournament and may delay other seasonal sports and the MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate school. Since the basketball tournament has to be rescheduled, it may disrupt other sports’ schedules, too.
In last year’s girls’ basketball season, they placed 1st place, taking home the championship. Both Andres and Mr. Peter Boyd returned as coaches.
