Boys soccer plays into sixth place

Tying their first game and losing their second, the MacArthur boys soccer team failed to advance in the district tournament.

The MacArthur boys soccer team placed sixth in the district tournament on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Valley High School. The boys soccer team went against two different schools, in the game against Willard they tied 0-0.  In the second game against Villa, the soccer team lost four to one.

Eighth-grader Arthur Prado felt that he had given enough effort to succeed, but the other teams were better.  Arthur said, “No it’s not just me it’s the whole team that needs to put in effort.”

This year, 70 boys tried out for the team, but only 20 players made the team that competed in the tournament.  MacArthur’s boy soccer team practiced every day of the week except for Wednesdays.  They practiced skills that will help them the most and prepare them for their games. Some of these drills being M&M’s, keep away, wall passes, and shooting.  Practice started at 2:45 and ended at 4:00.

“What helped me play better was just practicing with the team and learning from my mistakes,” said Arthur.

Seventh-grader Sergio Macias said, “Soccer is my favorite sport I enjoy playing it a lot and was confident I could make the team and help MacArthur.”

Between the two games played, only sixth-grader Ethan Kassa scored a goal.  Coach Melissa believes that Ethan was the star player of the team.  Melissa selected her players by “How well they listen to instructions. I’d rather have a person who cooperates rather than a person with talent.”
