Ms. Edwards takes over the after-school library duties

Beginning her new position following Winter Break, Ms. Christiany Edwards is the new after-school librarian.

When all the students came back from Winter Break, they were greeted by a new librarian, Ms. Christiany Edwards.  Edwards was interviewed and hired to be the after-school librarian.  She worked two library jobs before MacArthur, one of at a library in Anaheim and another at the Huntington Beach library.

Edwards was hired because she had a lot of experience with libraries.  She helped her mom in the Huntington Beach library when she was 10 years old.  Edwards actually had to go to school for library science, and she earned her Bachelor’s degree.

When MacArthur students go inside the library they might notice that some books are turned to face the cover, that’s because she turned them that way.  Edwards learned that technique helps garner interest in the visible titles.

According to Edwards, when the books are presented that way, from a distance students can see the cover, and it gets people interested in reading.  It makes the titles and covers more enticing.

Edwards most enjoys meeting new students after school.  After school about 15-20 students come, sometimes some students come in waves or in groups.  For the most part, students are respectful after school.  She has began a library club, which makes bookmarks and helped make posters for Read Across America .

Seventh-grader Leslie Infante said, “I really enjoy going here because we get to do many creative things here.”  Leslie is part of the after-school library club.

Edwards works specifically after school because she was hired to fill the additional librarian position.  Most students that come here do homework or just study. “Nothing bad happens…. That I have seen,” said Edwards.

Seventh-grader Luis Barbosa, who spends time in the library after school, said, “I think more people should join here because I have a fun time and it can take away time of you being bored.”
