The MacArthur football team won the Santa Ana Unified School District Intermediate School tournament on Saturday, October 7 for the fourth year in a row.  The tournament was held at Valley High School.  According to Coach Mr. Jesus Lozano, the boys gave everything they had for the game and they won because they were inspired to be great.

The  football team eliminated Carr, Spurgeon, Willard, and McFadden.  The scores were 13 to 0 (Carr), 14 to 7 (Spurgeon), 18 to 12 (Willard), and 24 to 14 (MacFadden). This is the fourth year in a row MacArthur has won the tournament, and each year the team went undefeated.

This is the first year Lozano coached football, taking over for retired P.E. Teacher Mr. Terry Young.  Lozano decided to coach the team because he wanted to give the players a chance to prove themselves.

“The boys were inspired to be great and they stepped up to the challenge and accomplished their goal,” said Lozano.  Lozano was very proud of the boys for giving everything they had.

Eighth-grader Paul Mendoza motivated the team players by cheering from the sideline.  “They won the game with teamwork and hard work,” said Paul.

According to eighth-grader Tania Lopez, she thinks the football team won because of hard work and training.  As a team manager, she saw the entire season, from practices to tournament.

Eighth-grader Humberto Serrano played linemen, and he really enjoyed playing football because “it’s really an active and fun sport.”  Humberto said that the team was perfect with everything from cooperating and teamwork.

“It was an amazing experience, we were all happy but we knew we could take home the trophy!” said Humberto.  He also explained how the team players were like brothers and that they all worked hard through hurdles and accomplished everything they could with teamwork.

Overall, the 40 MacArthur football players did amazing Lozano felt.  Scoring 11 touchdowns over four games was another impressive win for the MacArthur football players.
