Drama students see Tartuffe by Moliere on November 3

Attending a field trip to Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, MacArthur’s drama class viewed a classic French play.

Drama teacher Mrs. Holly Kotler and the drama students attended a field trip on November 3.  This field trip took place at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. They departed the MacArthur campus at 8:30 AM and returned at 2:00 PM.

“Every chance you get, go see live theater,” said Kotler.

When they arrived at the university they went to the university’s theater. The play they had gone to see was  a play called Tartuffe by Moliere.

There were 25 students who had gone along with Kotler and MacArthur Counselor Mrs Laurie Tristan and about 18 other students from a homeschooling program.  In total, there were about 45 people at the play.

Seventh-grader Helena Urquiza said, “This was one of the best plays ever!”

The drama is an elective that sixth, seventh, and eighth graders can take. The drama class also has their own plays for MacArthur school. “The drama class is a great way to get rid of your stage fright and have a good time,” said Helena.

On the Vanguard University website here is a segment from the play description:

When the kind, yet dim, Orgon invites the religious zealot known as Tartuffe into his home, he has no idea that he has accepted a snake into his den. While Tartuffe acts like a kind minister, he is ,in fact a con man plotting to rob Orgon of everything he holds dear!

While Orgon becomes hopelessly entranced by Tartuffe, his family rallies to expose Tartuffe for the rascal that he is. Will they be able to save the hapless Orgon from Tartuffe’s clutches? It may take an act of fake seduction– and an obvious Deus ex Machina — to help defeat this lascivious hypocrite.”

A classical comedy of manners full of biting satire which reminds us that looks can be deceiving.”

“The Tartuffe play was an extraordinary play to watch,” said Helena.

Furthermore, Vanguard university is a private school located in Costa Mesa. They have a there at called the Lyceum performing arts theatre. “They have a wonderful campus filled with beautiful atmosphere and wonderful actors that really made the play come to life,” said Kotler.
