The battle for the battle royale genre

Which battle royale video game should you play? Our reporter weighs in.

Ah, Battle Royale. One of, if not the most popular gaming phenomenon of the last couple of years.  Fortnite, Apex, even PUBg are very big names in video games, and every month they rake in millions of players. B.R. has something for everyone! but which one is the best of them all?

First off, what is a battle royale game?  A battle royale game is a 99 player experience in which you have to eliminate all other players and be the last one standing.  The name Battle Royale probably originated from the book and movie, Battle Royale.  The genre started exploding in mid-2017 and expanded to many other games, looking to attract players. What originally was merely a game feature turned into a phenomenon that millions play today.

So since that’s out of the way let’s settle the debate; which battle royale game is best?

In terms of gameplay, I’ll have to give it up to Fortnite. It’s very fast paced and easy to pick up and play if you’ve ever played any shooter game before. It is also very pleasant to look at and actually has an interesting story to it that unravels every season. With interesting regular updates, Fortnite is the top winner in gameplay.

That being said I’ll have to give Apex the trophy in terms of graphics. Apex has a Grand Canyon-esque map to it and expands from water treatment facilities to towns.  It has beautiful shading and, depending on what console you are on, can be an immersive experience, making it look very gritty and warlike, but with enough color to pop.  Just the way it is supposed to be.

Now, we’ve mostly been talking about successful battle royale games, but let’s not forget the failed ones.  Ones that have mostly fallen out of popularity, and are now almost obsolete.  Games such as H1Z1 and, to an extent, PUBg never really made it to the popularity that Fortnite and Apex Legends have. These game started the battle royale craze, but alas, they fell out of favor.  This was caused by terrible servers, lag, and buggy gameplay.  For a battle royale, and in fact any type of video game, a game needs to be smooth and playable in the first place. That’s what makes a good battle royale.

Fortnite has been around since 2017.  It has the most experience being a battle royale and has fixed upon many, many, many bugs in the game.  Apex Legends came out in 2019 and gained 50 million players in the first month, which is a fourth of the Fortnite player base.  I don’t know what will happen in the coming future, but for now, I have to say, Fortnite is the best battle royale. With a consistent fan base, hundreds of thousands of dollars every month, and amazing gameplay, Fortnite comes out on top.
