After losing in the knock-out rounds, MacArthur’s boys basketball finishes third

The MacArthur Boys Basketball team placed third in the intermediate school tournament that took place at Segerstrom High School.  The March 25 competition was open to students of all grade levels.

Coach Mr. Charlie Andres said, “I think the team did well, overall.  I always expect the team to win every game.”  For anyone who wants to join the team next year, Andres suggested “to practice as much as they can and focus on basic fundamentals and to play within themselves.”

Prior to the tournament, the team defeated McFadden Intermediate, Carr Intermediate, and Esqueda K-8 as part of the travel portion of the season.

At the tournament, MacArthur played against Romero-Cruz Intermediate and Sierra Prep in the tournament’s group stage. The knock-out rounds were made up of games against Mendez  Intermediate, which was the only loss with a score of 22 to 32.

“I did pretty good, we won the first rounds but Mendez just had a better team,” said eighth-grader Jason P.   “Throughout the whole season, I dropped 16 points.”

Joseph G., eighth-grade, added, “I did decent.  I got seven points the whole season from layups, but I got benched a lot.”

The team practiced for six weeks, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:30 pm – 4:15 pm.

In past tournaments, boys’ basketball won a championship last year and the year 2017.

Eighth-grader Noah M. said, “I did pretty well, I got some fast breaks and layups.”
