New activity: Dance society created by students

Dance society, which is a new activity for the 2016-17 school year, practices in the PAR, Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch.

Every Tuesdays and Thursdays, the dance society meets in the Performing Arts Room to learn dance.  The dance society started on September 27 by eighth-grader Andrea Godinez and is advised by Math Teacher Mrs. Emily Fellmer.

Andrea and her friends wanted to create a new society at MacArthur that featured dance, especially since there is no dance elective currently offered.  Participating students learn and practice hip hop dances .

“I just feel like I wanted to do something fun for our last year here at MacArthur,” said Andrea.  She started this team by getting together her friends who were interested, and then had her proposal approved by Principal Mr. David Casper.  Fellmer was glad to be the advisor, and Andrea currently serves as captain.

The dance society is open to everyone at the P.A.R. at lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Any interested students can take part.

According to Fellmer, the dance society’s future plans are to perform these dances at an assembly. They are also planning to do performances during lunch.

This dance society is called a society rather than a dance team because it is not a club and is not raising any money.  Therefore, it is called a society instead of a team or club.

Fellmer said, “It’s creating a place for people to do something that they enjoy.”
