All eighth graders take Spanish placement test for high school

On February 17, all eighth grade students took the Spanish placement test. They are required to take the Spanish test, so high schools can place the incoming ninth graders in the correct Spanish course. The students take the Spanish test on their Chromebooks on a website called Illuminate.

MacArthur should bring Domino’s Pizza back!

Students of MacArthur are given the choice to eat breakfast, nutrition, and lunch Monday -Friday. Different lunches are served every single day, except for Wednesday when students get the option of eating pizza: supreme, pepperoni, or cheese.

Magic society teaches students about the art of illusion

Instead of advising the cup stacking club, Technology Teacher Mr. Kevin Papke is now advising the magic club. The purpose of the magic club is to increase self esteem by performing in front of people and to improve communication skill. Magic club is learning, practice, and presenting magic tricks. Students will learn card, coins, the pads and other tricks.

50 MacArthur students take the National Assessment of Education Progress

This year, 50 eighth grade students were randomly selected to take a National Assessment of Education Progress exam also known as the nation's report card on February 2. This exam compared students in California and what their learning comparison in all the other 50 states to see how the students are progressing. This test was taken on an iPad, online.

New season, high hopes for MacArthur girls soccer

The MacArthur girls are getting ready for a strong performance in the soccer tournament on March 25 at Greenville Fundamental, from 8:30 AM. The girls soccer team is coached by P.E. Teacher Mr. Patrick Evans, Segerstrom High School Coach Melissa Mazariegos, and Math Teacher Mr. Jim Axton.

Ms. Edwards takes over the after-school library duties

When all the students came back from Winter Break, they were greeted by a new librarian, Ms. Christiany Edwards. Edwards was interviewed and hired to be the after-school librarian. She worked two library jobs before MacArthur, one of at a library in Anaheim and another at the Huntington Beach library.

School board opts for earlier calendar despite poll results

On January 24, 2017 the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education approved the 2017-18 calendar. Next year's calendar had significant changes including moving the first day of instruction to August 14, 2017, ending the school year May 31, limiting Thanksgiving break to three days, and reducing Winter Break from three weeks to two.

Advanced math students compete in AMC-8

On November 3, Math Teacher Mrs.Sherry Skipper’s honors Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry classes received the opportunity to participate in AMC-8 a national mathematics competition. The American Mathematics Competition, by the Mathematical Association of America, has been providing exams for participating students for over 60 years. Skipper’s honors students have been participating since 2010.

Intersession program helps students stay engaged

The Winter Intersession was a cross-curricular, academic review and extension program. During the program students read two biographies and prepared for the District Writing Test, as well as engaging in physical activities, conducting and analyzing science experiments, and they built a weebly, which is an website where students had the opportunity to publish their work to the web.
